성령의 열매는 하나님의 성품의 반영입니다. 인간 본성과 죄성으로 contaminated된 성품이 우리 안에 회복되어가며 자연스럽게 나타나는 결과물인 것이지요.
우리말로 알고 있는 성령의 열매를 영어로 보면 그 속성에 대한 더 깊은 이해를 가져다 줄 수 있겠지요.
일상생활에서 사용되는 영어단어의 의미와 성경적인 의미가 다소 다를 수 있음을 고려하였고, 사전적인 의미 이상의 다양한 영어원문들도 필요에 따라 인용하였습니다 .
1. Love 사랑
흔한 말, 사랑... 다양한 사랑의 모습이 떠오르지만, 여기서의 사랑은 이렇게 구체화됩니다.

2. Joy 희락
1) 일반적 의미 : the emotion evoked by well-being, success, or good fortune or by the prospect of possessing what one desires
- 웰빙, 성공, 행운에 의해서 혹은 바라는 것을 소유할 수 있을 거라는 기대감으로 생기는 감정
2) 성경적 의미 : a settled state of contentment, confidence and hope
- 자족함과 확신과 소망으로 안정된 상태
Joy is more than circumstances. Happiness is dictated by circumstance.
- 희락은 환경 그 이상이다. 행복은 환경에 의해 규정되지만...
3. Peace 화평
1) 일반적 의미 : a condition of law and order or the absence of war
- 법과 질서로 통제되거나 전쟁이 없는 상태
2) 성경적 의미 : the experience of salvation that comes from God or the harmonious relationships between persons
- 하나님으로부터 오는 구원에 대한 체험이나 사람들 사이의 조화로운 관계에 대한 체험
4. Patience 오래 참음
patience는 보통 forbearance, endurance 두 가지의 의미를 동시에 지님
1) forbearance : a quality of self-restraint or of not giving way to anger, even in the face of provocation; it is attributed to both God and man and is closely related to mercy and compassion.
- 관용 : 자제력이나 화를 쉽게 내지 않는 속성, 심지어 분노를 자극하는 상황에서도. 그 속성은 자비와 동정(공감)과 밀접하게 관계가 있는 하나님과 인간의 속성
2) endurance : a virtue by which one bears the trials of this life with resignation to God's will, and is therefore associated with hope
- 인내 : 하나님의 뜻에 맡김으로 삶의 시련을 견뎌내는 미덕, 그리고 결국에는 소망으로 연결됨
* 인간을 즉시 심판하여 멸하지 않으시고 기다려주시면서 한없는 사랑으로 구원을 베푸시는 과정
5. Kindness 자비
An attribute of God and quality desirable but not consistently found in humans.
- 하나님의 속성이며 바람직한 속성이지만 인간들에게서는 일관되게 나타나지 않는 것임
하나님의 일반 은총(common grace), 완전한 구원에서 드러나는 속성
6. Goodness 양선
When we act out of true goodness of the heart, we are obedient to God’s commandments and seek the benefit of others.
- 우리 마음의 진정한 양선을 행할 때 우리는 하나님의 계명을 따르고 다른 사람들의 이익을 추구하게 된다.
The life of Jesus Christ is the perfect example of goodness, as He died on the cross for the sins of humanity in order to give us the gift of eternal life. His ministry and sacrifice is an example of God’s goodness toward mankind. After all, the term “gospel” means “good news.”
- 예수 그리스도의 삶은 양선의 완벽한 예이다. 인류의 죄를 위해 십자가에 죽으셨고, 그것은 영생의 선물을 우리에게 주려 하심이었다. 그의 사역과 희생은 인류를 향한 하나님의 양선이다. 결국 “복음”이라는 용어는 “좋은 소식”을 의미한다.
7. Faithfulness 충성
It’s easy to slip into the mindset of doubt and cynicism. We live in a broken world, and we may have gone through painful experiences that cause us to lose our trust in others.
- 의심과 냉소의 마음자세에 빠져들기는 쉽다. 우리는 망가진 세상 속에 살고 있으며 다른 사람들에 대한 신뢰를 잃게 되는 고통스러운 체험을 할 수도 있다.
For this reason, faithfulness, a fruit of the Spirit, can be a challenging trait to possess.
- 이런 이유로 성령의 열매인 faithfulness는 우리가 가지기엔 너무도 어렵고 도전이 되는 특성이다.
Faithfulness comes from a place of trust and loyalty.
- 믿음은 신뢰와 충성으로부터 나온다.
8. Gentleness 온유
1) 사전적 의미 : the quality of being kind, tender, or mild-mannered
- 친절하고 부드럽고 온화한 특성
2) 성경적 의미 : showing humility and thankfulness towards God, as well as polite, restrained and compassionate behaviour towards everyone else
- 하나님에 대해 겸손함과 감사를 보이는 것. 모든 다른 이들에 대해 예의 바르고, 절제되고, 자비로운 행동도 포함함
* meekness : controlled strength(not weakness)
- 온순함 : 통제된 강함(약함이 아닌)
9. Self-control 절제
Physical and emotional self-mastery, particularly in situations of intense provocation or temptation.
- 육체적이고 감정적인 자제력, 특히 강한 분노의 상황이나 유혹 속에서도
* temperance : emotional restraint or self-control
- 절제 : 감정적인 자제나 자기 절제
MSG(The Message)에서는 성령의 열매를 아래와 같이 풀어서 설명해 놓았습니다.
1. 사랑 : affection for others – 다른 사람들에 대한 애정
2. 희락 : exuberance about life – 풍성한 삶
3. 화평 : serenity - 고요함
4. 오래 참음 : a willingness to stick with things – 기꺼이 끝까지 견디려는 마음
5. 자비 : a sense of compassion in the heart – 마음속의 동정과 공감
6. 양선 : a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people – 사물과 사람들 속에 기본적인 거룩함이 스며들어 있다는 확신
7. 충성 : loyal commitments – 충성스러운 헌신
8. 온유 : not needing to force our way in life – 우리가 살아가는 방식을 강요하지 않음
9. 절제 : able to marshal and direct our energies wisely. - 에너지를 지혜롭게 모으고 관리할 수 있는 속성
